Insomnia is a condition that results in the difficulty of the person finding it extremely hard to fall asleep during the usual hours. This is characterised as a condition that is the result of psychiatric and medical factors which converge in the attacking the ability of a person to fall asleep. People affected by the condition find it hard to fall asleep, and end up waking up early in the morning. They always feel tired and cannot give their best in the daily activities such as work and school life. It is also seen that once they wake up from their sleep, they find it hard to go back to sleep.
The condition is being affected by millions of people in the world, and the number of cases is said to be increasing over the years. Stress is one of the factors that is said to be one of the causes for insomnia as people who have work and family pressure end up losing sleep over it for prolonged periods of time. This results in the development of unhealthy sleeping habits. Causes of Insomnia
Insomnia can be caused due to a number of reasons such which can be psychological or physical. But the reasons for the development of chronic insomnia can be due to the effect of some other serious condition that already exists. Acute insomnia is usually seen due to some recent events that have to lead to stress and other emotional issues. Here are a few causes that can be attributed as the cause of insomnia:
Hormone – the change in the production of oestrogen in women during menstruation would lead to insomnia.
Psychological issue – such as depression, anxiety, and other disorders that are psychotic can lead to insomnia.
Phones, tablets, and computers – in the bedroom results in people end up using them during the time they are expected to sleep. This results in them losing the precious sleeping time and developing unhealthy sleeping habits.
Circadian rhythm disruption – due to change in altitude, heat, cold, environmental noise, job shifts, or jet lag the circadian cycle can be disrupted. This results in the person not getting enough sleep and developing insomnia.
Medical condition – a person suffering from stroke, brain tumour, extreme pain, congestive heart failure, chronic fatigue syndrome, acid reflux disease, sleep apnea and much more can be at the risk of being affected by insomnia much more than the rest.
Other factors – such as pregnancy, sleeping next to someone who snores, overactive mind, genetic conditions, or the effect of parasites can lead to insomnia.
Medications can also cause several cases of insomnia. Some of these medicines are insomnia cough syrup, statins, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, Alpha blockers, Second generation H1 agonists, SSRI antidepressants, and Corticosteroids have been noted to cause the condition of insomnia.
Insomnia is a serious condition and requires proper attention, or it can lead to other serious psychotic conditions. So it is important to provide proper treatment to the person who is affected.
